Helping Each Other to Make the World a Little Nicer

Many people’s lives have turned upside-down during the past year, while dissatisfaction and strife have arisen from many factors. As we figure out our new normal, let’s reflect on who we truly are. No one is perfect, but we can work toward being better. It doesn’t matter who we interact with - strangers, friends, coworkers, or family members - we can treat everyone with courtesy and respect. Here are some easy ways to make life a little more pleasant for everyone.

1. Say “Hello,” “Please,” “Thank You,” and “Your Welcome”

Maybe we are in a hurry or nervous about being around other people, but that is no reason to forget our basic manners. Recognizing and expressing your appreciation for the other person will make you both feel better.

2. Knock Before You Enter

Politely tap on any door that’s closed - office, bedroom, bathroom, dressing room. It’s polite and can help avoid embarrassing moments for everyone.

3. Put Your Smartphone Away During Meals

After a year of togetherness, we might be running out of new things to talk about but sharing a meal without distraction strengthens bonds with our friends and loved ones.

4. Teach Your Kids Good Manners

With the increasing popularity of personal and professional video communication such as Zoom, it’s essential for kids (and some adults) to learn a new set of manners.

5. Create a No-Judgement Zone

A rude waiter? A sarcastic customer service representative? Everybody has bad days - especially this past year. Give the person a break and let it go. After all, someday soon, you may be the one who needs a pass.

6. Cough or Sneeze into Your Elbow

COVID? Flu? Common Cold? This past year has been brutal. Take precautions so germs don’t spread. Somebody’s life may depend on it.

7. Ask Before Posting

Not everyone wants exposure on social media, and you’re not a reporter — so stop spreading the news.

8. Take Some Time Before Reacting to a Snarky Email or Text

It’s tempting to slam the person immediately, but that often backfires. Even if you can’t respect the sender, respect yourself enough to take time to contemplate the best response.

9. Stay Home When You’re Sick

Some things, like your cold, should not be shared.

10. Reach Out to People Who Are Grieving

Don’t act as nothing happened. If you don’t know what to do, say you’re sorry and be there. It’s enough that they don’t feel alone.

11. Help Someone Who’s Clearly Struggling

Physical, emotional, financial – the last year has intensified many people’s struggles. No one can fix the world, but you can be somebody’s hero. Help get that item from the grocery store’s highest shelf. Bring food to a family or elder experiencing financial hardship. Be there to listen if someone has had a serious health diagnosis.

12. Learn to Say You’re Sorry

Even if you did not mean to hurt the other person, apologizing can strengthen bonds and help repair your relationship.

Maintaining courteous relationships should be a priority, whether with family members, colleagues, or the public. In any interaction, take a moment to reflect – are you speaking from your true self? Are you respecting the other person as well as yourself? A little self-reflection can help make all our lives better.

What will you do today to be a nicer person?
